The Mitchell Area Chamber and Development is proud to announce that Mitchell has been named Community of the Year at the South Dakota Governor’s Conference on Economic Development. This prestigious honor recognizes Mitchell’s ongoing commitment to economic growth, community development, and quality of life enhancements that make it a standout city in South Dakota.

“This award is a testament to the hard work, vision, and collaboration that make Mitchell a thriving community. With 100 new housing lots soon available for workforce housing and 52 families already relocated through our $1,000 ‘Move to Mitchell’ program, we are actively addressing housing and workforce needs. Mitchell is also home to the largest economic development project in state history—the $500 million High Plains Soybean Processing Plant—which will bring significant job opportunities and growth to our region. Our momentum is stronger than ever, and we’re committed to building on this success—creating opportunities for businesses, residents, and future generations. Mitchell’s best days are ahead.” – Mike Lauritsen, CEO of the Mitchell Area Development Corporation

Mitchell’s growth is evident in the development of South Lake and Ridgeview on Foster, which provide quality and affordable housing options for families, professionals, and retirees. Economic expansion is further driven by the High Plains Processing Plant, strengthening value-added agriculture and creating well-paying jobs. The Relocation Program has attracted new talent with financial incentives, while the Community Concierge Program helps newcomers acclimate by connecting them with resources and networking opportunities. Additionally, the Daycare Grant Program has supported childcare workers and expanded daycare facilities, ensuring working families have reliable options.

Receiving the Community of the Year award underscores Mitchell’s unwavering dedication to economic development, community enrichment, and forward-thinking initiatives. With continued investment in housing, business expansion, workforce development, and quality of life enhancements, Mitchell is poised for sustained growth and success.
